Edelson & Associates History
Edelson & Associates was founded in 1980 by Richard I Edelson, Ph.D., with a goal of providing comprehensive neuropsychological and psychological evaluations and compassionate therapeutic services. Dr. Edelson, who had completed his training in neuropsychology under Muriel Lezak, Ph.D. at the VA Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, sought to integrate psychology and neuropsychology into medical settings within the Louisville area and by so doing to assist in improving patient outcomes. After becoming a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology in 1991, Dr. Edelson actively began training clinicians and graduate students in neuropsychology, pulling students from the University of Louisville and Spalding University and attracting employees from across the United States. The initial clinical focus was on serving adult and geriatric patients, but demand for child/adolescent services lead to the addition of pediatric-centered clinicians a few years after the practice was established. Currently, patients range in age from less than two years old to well over 100 years old.
After its founding, Edelson & Associates quickly grew into one of the largest psychology groups in the state of Kentucky, with services being provided at local hospitals, inpatient mental health centers, and in an ever-expanding private clinic setting that is now located on New LaGrange Rd in the St. Matthews area of Louisville. Over the years, clinicians have participated with local groups including The Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana, Alzheimer’s Association, Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky (BIAK), Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT), and the Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana, assisting with fundraising, giving educational talks and providing evaluation services. In cooperation with Baptist Health Louisville, Edelson & Associates helped to establish and continues to facilitate the Baptist Health Louisville Brain Injury Support Group, focusing on helping persons with brain injuries and their families/caregivers cope with the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive changes associated with brain injury.
In 2018, after years of increasing demand for forensic evaluations, the practice split into two entities Edelson & Associates and Edelson Forensics. In 2019, Byron White, Psy.D, took over as Clinical Director of Edelson and Associates, having previously been the Head of the Child/Adolescent Department. Dr. White had worked with Dr. Edelson for over 25 years, first as a graduate student and then as a clinician in both the adult and child divisions of the practice. Dr. Edelson now focuses on forensic services. Dr. White is focused on helping Edelson and Associates continue the mission of providing comprehensive evaluation and therapeutic services to a diverse population within the Louisville community.
